What is DID?

A DID (Direct Inward Dialling) number is a phone number that routes incoming calls over the internet to your SIP trunk or PBX, without a physical line in that location.

DID explained

DIDs let you give customers a local or national number in a country where you have no office. Calls to the number arrive at your system as SIP INVITEs, and you route them to an extension, queue or IVR like any other inbound call. Many DIDs can also be used as caller ID on outbound calls, subject to local rules.

Availability and paperwork vary a lot by country. Some numbers are available instantly; others require proof of a local address or a business registration before activation. Numbers are usually billed monthly, sometimes with a per-minute charge for inbound calls.

Example

A support team in Manila buys a German DID (+49 30 ...) and points it at their FreePBX queue, so German customers make a local call to Berlin.
