What is SIP trunk?
A SIP trunk is a virtual phone line delivered over the internet that connects your PBX or phone system to the public telephone network for inbound and outbound calls.
SIP trunk explained
Instead of physical lines, a SIP trunk gives you a number of simultaneous call channels and one or more phone numbers, configured as a connection on your PBX. Calls are billed per minute or bundled, and capacity can be raised without new wiring.
Setting one up means pointing your PBX at the provider’s SIP server, choosing IP or digest authentication, matching codecs, and creating routes for outgoing and incoming calls. With prepaid billing you top up a balance and calls are deducted from it as you go.
Example
A business tops up $200, adds its PBX’s public IP to the trunk, creates an outbound route for international numbers, and makes its first call within the hour.
Put it into practice
Prepaid SIP trunks and wholesale routes from $200. Ask sales for rates or the NOC for a technical answer.
